Certificate Program in Genealogy and Family History
University of Washington Certificate Program in Genealogy and Family History
Discover the story of your family's past in this unique nine-month program taught by two expert researchers. The centerpiece of the program is your family history project: a written and visual record that brings to life your ancestors and their world.
To develop your project, program lectures, discussions, readings, and field trips teach you:
* how to locate genealogical and historical resources (including governmental and religious records, databases, letters, photos, newspaper clippings, and oral history interviews) that describe family members and their surroundings.
* how to use specific research methods to interpret the information that you find and understand the life and times of your ancestors.
* how your ancestors were affected by migration of ethnic groups, population shifts, and differences in urban and rural lifestyles.
At the end of the program, you will have preserved a vital part of your family's past and know how to use a range of research tools. Individuals, teachers, librarians, and others interested in family history are welcome.
I am a graduate of this program and highly recommend it. Both researchers who teach the Certificate Program are well known to the Washington Genealogical community. Sarah Thorson Little is a professional genealogist and researcher par excellence. She is a gifted teacher. When you have completed this program, she will send you off with confidence in your ability to research any genealogical question you may encounter. Dr. Lorraine McConaghy, Historian of the Seattle Museum of History and Industry, brings history to life for you. She teaches you how to place your ancestor in their proper time period when writing your family history by adding the remnants of the past to your stories. Her lectures are spellbinding.
